In mid-September I realized that for all the energy I was expending while I was walking that I didn’t get very far. That’s when I noticed there was a crack in my ankle foot orthotics, one each foot. The crack was in the post that connects my legs to the support under my foot. It turns out that the way they are engineered, the crack prevented the energy that was loaded into the braces when my foot goes down from being transferred back when I lifted my foot back up. So, that explained why I was getting worn out before I got anywhere.
Sounds easy enough: get new braces. The problem is that healthcare insurance has large deductibles that must be satisfied each year. It’s like $1,000 deductible before they start paying. And of course the AFO’s were $850. So I had to pay. The good news is that they ordered heavier duty AFO’s this time so hopefully I won’t break them during normal wear and tear.
Of course one thing leads to another. It turns out my shoes were wearing out too, and the new braces don’t quite fit in the old shoes well (they are a little bit thicker). So, I needed new shoes. And once again, it sounds easy enough, but oh my God, it’s not. Old worn out feet in heavier braces with a post coming up the side of my ankle rather than behind my ankle don’t fit in the old, known, shoe brand and size. Thus started my search for shoes.
I’m a really slow shopper (because I don’t like shopping). Online shoe shopping doesn’t work well when you have AFO’s because each shoe is built differently and most don’t accommodate the AFO’s. So I’ve been through about 4 pair so far. I tried two difference ECCO brand shows, and two different AETREX brand shoes. No luck. The problem is they seem to fit in the store when I try them on. They feel okay walking in them. But when I sit down for a couple of hours they don’t seem to fit properly because they squeeze my foot and it starts to hurt. So, I spend an hour getting to the store and trying on shoes, and another half hour to get home. I wait for anĀ evening when I’m going to be indoors for a few hours on a rug or hardwood so if they don’t work I can return them. Then after a couple of hours when I know they worn’t work I decide to return them. But that generally has to wait a few days until the following weekend or when I have time to drive all the way to the store. A variation of driving to the store is to mail order them once I know what size and type I need. But that take time to return them via mail and wait for the refund.

The last pair I tried on were a Hubbard brand casual shoe. They seem to fit well, but they didn’t have the color I want. So I came home and mail ordered them. But they are not Amazon, so the shoes don’t show up in 2 days. I’m waiting a week. They’ll be here in a few days. Hopefully they will work. The shoes I’m wearing now are sneakers. They have a rip in the side on one shoe, and a hole in the bottom on the other. Fortunately we haven’t had any real significant snow this year or my feet would have been cold and wet.
I sure hope the shoes work. This is getting old.
