What a way to start the Year

Winter has finally arrived. At least it snowed a bit. It set the mood for what is happening in our country. I’m not one to waste time on politics or get into long winded diatribes about what political party is right, and which one is wrong. And my writings here rarely waste words on which candidate to vote for, or what single issue litmus test is right for casting a vote.

Nevertheless, right is right and wrong is wrong. There is some point where silence or complacency is not an option. And the events of the past couple of weeks with our latest president has risen to the occasion. Or, perhaps better stated, it has sunk to the occasion.

America has always been a very unique place. We have values and governance that have created freedoms and equality rarely known at any other location on our planet. The country’s history has been tumultuous at best. In my 65 years I have learned well about World War II, the Viet Nam and Korean wars, the Civil Rights movement, the Feminist movement, and many major disagreements and differences of opinion along the way. I have rarely voted for the winning president, identified at various times with different political parties, and have gone full circle on many significant social, religious, and legal issues.

Without succumbing to what some would call a “bleeding heart liberal” position, or to a fundamentalist conservative religious position, I can see honor and truth where it exists. And I can see ignorance, hatred, and fear where it erupts too. I won’t allow fear of terrorists to flame hatred of certain people based upon my ignorance of their religion, ethnic origination, color, sex, or financial position. And it stirs anger in me when a mob mentality strikes out against Jews, Muslims, Christians, Mexicans, Blacks, or Whites in some misguided entanglement with an ethno-nationalism that worships its country more than its God.

Mexicans, Muslims, Jews, and Blacks bleed red just like all humans. The present nonsense immigration and refugee ban is wrong. Period.

I am reminded of the poster with a native american Indian chief in full garb and headdress. The caption reads “What part about illegal immigrant don’t you understand?”

May God be patient with the ignorance of our king and guide us back to the republic we were meant to be. Regardless of religion, race, color, sex, creed, or political party affiliation: what is going on in this country is NOT American. May God have mercy on me as I struggle to understand it all.
