Each new period in life should begin with learning. At least that’s my way of navigation. Whether it is a week’s adventure to the north woods, a recuperation period following surgery, or the beginning of a new year… it is a new period and time to reflect upon life’s lessons. So with this great time of renewal and resolutions as 2013 gets underway, it’s time once again to learn something.
So today’s lesson, boys and girls, is about the birds and the bees. Well, it is actually about snails and turtles.

Some snails can sleep for 3 years! Some turtles can breathe through their butts! And, Donkeys kill more people every year than plane crashes!
And here we thought there was so little new to learn.
What else might we say about donkeys, turtles and snails?
Well, donkeys are often thought of as stubborn. Turtles are thought to be slow. And snails are considered even slower. There are about 43,000 species of snails in the world. Comparatively, there are only about 270 kinds of turtles. As for Donkeys, no one seems to know how many species there are. But there are 44 million donkeys in the world today. Oh, and a donkey’s favorite pastime is rolling!
Snails can’t hear you, no matter how loud you yell at them. Many turtles migrate thousands of miles and return to the exact same spot they started out from; but man hasn’t yet figured out how they do that. And, donkeys have fourteen (or more) stomachs!
And now for me 2013 is going to be a good year. At least now I’ve started it off by learning a few useful (?) facts.
If I can learn so much in two minutes about stuff no one really cares about, why can’t I do the same with stuff that actually matters? Like balancing the federal budget; reducing the carnage of mindless violence; and, stepping toward lasting world wide peace? The fastest snail can move 55 yards per hour. That’s a whole lot faster than the entire human race has moved toward achieving world peace. But again, no one seems to be counting.
Oh well, Happy New Year anyway. Go hug a donkey.
