I absolutely enjoy the visits I make to my cardiologist group of doctors and assistants. Each time I go they are so delightful and caring. Having spent an average amount of time in doctors’ offices I can attest, as most, that doctor’s offices are often disorganized, uncaring, and bureaucratic. But not so at my cardiologist.
The best doctors are not technically doctors at all, but the nurse practitioners who are the doctor’s assistants. There are two ladies that work as assistants to my cardiologist and they are both great. I never leave my appointment without something new, fun or noteworthy. And so it was today…
“None of us are getting out of this alive!”
Those were the words the assistant said to me upon having to make yet another change to the prescribed medications I am taking. I had to laugh. I said back to her “Yeah, life is fatal!”.
My condition is pretty good actually. My only real medical problem at present is that the cure is worse than the illness – my body just doesn’t agree with many of the medications my doctors throw at it. It’s not that unusual at all from what they say. It just means trying various remedies until we happen upon one my body accepts.
And I realize that my posts here have, of late, been pretty morbid. Most of us simply do not like to think about our ending. Some of us run in denial, hoping if death finds us it will be sudden and without any warning. Others consider themselves young, or at least not THAT old. So, “knowing” death is still many, many years away we chose to think about happier things. Somewhat fatalistically (pun intended) we say “there’s nothing you can do about it anyway – so why think on it?”

But in fact, death is very much a part of life. You simply cannot live without encountering death. So when the fine assistant said her fun words this morning I enjoyed it thoroughly. She was a young woman herself. But who faces death more often than a cardiologist? Maybe a mortician, but not most of us.
“None of us are getting out of this alive!”
I suppose if most of us heard that warning as we battled some natural catastrophe or sinking boat scenario, we would take minutes to think clearly about our spouse and children. We’d quickly ponder the days we’ve spent here (e.g., “my life flashed before my eyes!”). Maybe there would be sorrow or sadness at some deed left undone. Or perhaps more likely fear and anxiety would grab us.
So how much better to have a good laugh at death?
