TNSTAAFL

I am always amused when I learn a new acronym or initialism when I am texting. Some abbreviations are just plain funny – or perhaps confusing. Some are crude and some are rude. One I personally use the most is LYB – “Love ya bye!” (which, interestingly is NOT so popular it shows up on the lists).

But Saturday I learned another one. I’ve always known the entire phrase, but I was unaware it was so popular it had its own abbreviation. “TNSTAAFL”. What does it mean? There is no such thing as a free lunch. It traces back to the 1930s and 1940s when bars used to offer a free lunch to their drinking customers. It is a simple acknowledgement you can’t get something for nothing.

Saturday’s introduction to the abbreviation came for me while conducting business with my local Verizon Wireless store. For many months they have been hounding me, telling me that I am eligible for a free or discounted upgrade on my cellular telephone. Actually, there are three users on my account that were eligible. Sweet. But I have been doing business with Verizon long enough to know TNSTAAFL when it comes to their services.

Nevertheless, I must admit I was surprised when their sales lady informed me that the free upgrade involved a $30 upgrade fee. Huh? Yep, she said it is a new fee Verizon is charging for any cell phone upgrade. And she was able to repeat it a few times while questioned… all without ever laughing.

I guess they believe our brains are turning into marshmallows as we play video games, watch the TV we stream into our houses, and while we mindlessly misspell even the simplest of words in our text messaging. That’s just SSINF!
