These eyes of Mine

“God, grant me the Senility to forget the people I never liked anyway, the good fortune to run into the ones I do, and the eyesight to tell the difference.” -Unknown

Clearly (pun intended) vision is very important as we get old.

My old glasses are 5 1/2 years old. I’ve had my eyes tested during that time but my prescription didn’t change until now. It was great to hear the eye doctor tell me I didn’t have any of the awful things they check old people’s eyes for. And that aside from having dry eyes from the blood pressure medicine I take, everything was pretty good.

So all in all not much has changed during the last 5 or 6 years with glasses… Except, uh-oh… the price. Whoa! Glasses frames and lenses don’t cost $200 anymore! They seem to charge by the molecule. Actually the charges are separated by the lens, the prescription, the progressive magnification, the tinting, and the anti glare additive. They charge for the lightweight properties of the frames and lenses, and they charge if you want ultraviolet filtering in the sunglass clip-ons.

When they’re done adding things up you get the feeling they are about to send you to their finance department to work out a five year payment plan! Perhaps a second mortgage on the house is in order? Soon they will probably have some automatic paycheck deduction plan. When did optometry play catch-up with dentistry and orthodontics?

Ok, ok… I’m exaggerating. But not by much. It seems eyeglass prices have doubled in the past five years or so. And eyeglasses are often not covered by our medical insurance plans. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that my own insurance plan provides a 20% discount on the eye glasses. And 20% of a lot is a lot! So that’s good.

Another fun quote is an old one by Ann Landers. She said “Rose-colored glasses are never made in bifocals. Nobody wants to read the small print in dreams.” ~ Ann Landers.

The funny thing is that technically they do make tinted bifocals and transitions lenses. In fact they can actually combine not only tinting with progressive lenses, but you can even add another feature: ultra-violent screening properties can be added on top of tinting or “Rose-coloring”.

I suppose now that Google is selling Internet projecting camera glasses any constraints or limitations are laughable. Except the underlying constraints of the human eyes themselves.

For all of our advances and technology there is no sight without the gift of vision. The list of potential eye health problems is seemingly endless. And the list of vision enhancements and colorations brought about through healthcare advances and technology is just as long. But except for God’s grace granting our eyesight each new day, the lists are meaningless.

I am very grateful today for my eyesight.
