A Chromebook and Bodhi Linux

At the beginning of November I last wrote about my continuing saga to leave microsoft windows behind, along with apple to whatever extent possible, and move into the world of linux and open source software. As I had written, I was tired of microsoft deciding when I had to open my wallet and spend money because they were no longer supporting their previous version of software, and I was tired of the very pricey cost of apple products and software – their has to be a better way.

So as I’ve said before in my blog, I purchased a cheap Chromebook computer (Acer C720) and set out to see if it was possible to leave microsoft and apple behind. And indeed it is, although there is a learning curve involved and you have to want to make it work, That said I tried Ubuntu Linux. It worked fairly well, but it updates itself all the time and about every week or two with the latest version of Trusty Tahr I lost use of my touchpad, which was an annoyance when I didn’t have an hour to re-load linux. So I went back to a version of linux I had tried only briefly in passing early on: Bodhi.

Bodhi is a minimalist approach to an operating system where you can add anything you want to, but it starts off with a very unloaded basic no frills package. I added Libre Office, an open source (free) parallel to Microsoft Office, and also some other modules I have written about previously. And Bodhi has got to be, by far, the prettiest version of Linux there is!

The bottom line is: Bodhi works on an Acer Chromebook C720. It just works. No crashes, no mess-ups and no re-loads. So Bodhi it is. And as of the beginning of 2015, the Acer C720 is still King of the Pack. It is still the number one selling Chromebook. And it is still the most economical for what you get. I recommend no touchscreen, but go for the larger drive storage version. You should be able to get going for less than $250 from Amazon, including a case to carry it in. The rest of what is needed is time and patience, reading and learning. No money.

I have been using the Chromebook since last spring looking at my wife’s college work, and contributing or editing when I can to see if Libre Office is completely compatible with Word with what has to be turned in to the professors. And, it is. So… if a college student wants to make a Chromebook work for their college work and courses, it will. For $250. Including office software and all the add-ons. That is certainly better than the $1500 alternatives with laptops and microsoft office. At least when you have no money to spare.

So now I will watch for whatever is next, certain that more economical fun stuff is on the horizon. And, I must mention that I gave Apple the boot too. A couple of weeks ago I retired my iPhone 5 for an Adroid LG G3. Wow, what a difference. I couldn’t be happier.
