I got my new ankle foot orthotic braces Monday. They are made by a company called Allard. The particular model is called Toe Off. They are light weight carbon material with a flat slab under my feet, a narrow bar vertically on the side up out of the shoe, and pads that strap to the shin cup in front of my lower legs. They are quite a bit different than my 13 year old plastic AFO’s that came up the back of my lower leg.
I’m getting used to them. Apparently from what the doc said it is a process, particularly when you change from one style of AFO to another. These give me much more agility but, at least at first, less stability. They are very lightweight, and somehow their design permits only two speeds when walking: on and off. That’s to say that it is easier for me to stand still in these AFO’s. And after a couple minutes of walking I find my stride. And it is a much longer stride than before – and I go really fast compared to what I’m used to.
With these new braces when I go for a walk I get an aerobic workout. My heart beats faster and I’m much more inclined to use what muscles I have to push and move forward. It feels strange keeping up with people when I walk, not having them wait on me. But it is a good kind of strange.

So now I’ve been out hiking around the industrial park area during my lunch break, trying to get back my legs and build up my stamina before going to the beach on vacation. The braces won’t do much for me in the sand, because I will leave them at the beach house when we go swimming. But much of the time (and probably most of the distance) is spent shopping and visiting the “get your money” places up and down the Outer Banks. Who knows, maybe this year I will once again make it to the top of a light house.
I am hoping to set CMT aside now for a while… and go back to living life, ignoring it as much as possible.
